About Us

World In Need (WIN) is a Christian organisation seeking to help men, women and children in some of the most disadvantaged areas in the world, to overcome the suffering, poverty and difficulties that they face in their daily lives.

What have we done to help?

WIN was formed in 1991 in response to the crisis facing the Kurdish people in Iraq. Since then, our teams have helped victims of the earthquake disaster in Turkey, slum children in Delhi, drug addicts in Thailand, "Smokey mountain" rubbish dump dwellers in northern Philippines, Borana nomads in Kenya, Fulani and Hausa peoples in Nigeria.  We have given aid in Kosovo, started work with orphans in Uganda, helped develop jobs in Mombasa, and assisted the refugees in Azerbaijan.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT is: " Changing attitudes through aid and education"

World In Need started in 1991:

As a direct response to the urgent needs of the Kurds who were gassed by Saddam Hussein in Iraqi Kurdistan.

With the clear understanding that western help needs to be locally sensitive and to empower local people to find local ways of making changes in their own culture.

This has grown into a movement working in some 20 countries, encouraging and empowering those who seek to make a difference where they live, and to own their own development work.  Although we are practising Christians and take the teachings of Christ seriously our help is non-partisan, unconditional and faith based.
Vision

Our vision is to empower local people to fulfil the Millennium Goals in the places where they live and have influence.

The Millennium Goals are:

1.    To reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day.
2.    To reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger.
3.    To ensure that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling.
4.    To eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education.
5.    To reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under five.
6.    To halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS.
7.    To integrate the principles of sustainable development into our activities, reverse loss of environmental resources.
8.    To reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water.
9.    To develop further an open trading and financial system that is rule-based, predictable and non-discriminatory, includes a commitment to good governance, development and poverty reduction in local activities.
10.   In cooperation with the developing countries, develop decent and productive work for youth.
11.   To provide access to affordable essential drugs in developing countries.
12.   In cooperation with the private sector, make available the benefits of new technologies; especially information and communications technologies.

Unwanted shares?

You can get rid of these charitably by donating them to ShareGift (registered charity 1052686), an independent charity which specialises in accepting small holdings of shares, particularly those which are not worth selling because that would cost more than they are worth. ShareGift distributes its funds to other UK charities and over 1,000 UK charities have already benefited, including World In Need.
