Soy Village Community Farm Tractor
Lugari, a district in the Western Province of Kenya is an agriculturally rich district. The area can sustain the growing of maize, many varieties of horticultural crops and remembering that agriculture is the back bone of Kenya's economy, the district stands out among the rest.
One thing that puts the farmers of the area a level above the rest is the use of machinery. The lands are huge and it is impractical to use human labour to cultivate them. Serious farmers in the area own ploughing tractors and other machines that make easy the entire process of ploughing, planting and harvesting.
Those farmers who do not posses their own machines, particularly tractors normally pay very huge costs of hiring both the tractors and its implements. The charges are normally so high and in the end of it, it is not cost-effective when the time for harvesting comes.
The Leslie Newbigin Training Centre is helping villages like this to improve their lives. It is for this reason that I feel that it would really assist Lesley Newbigin Training Centre to raise money for sustenance and raising money for the running of the Institution by helping farmer's in this area to plough for them at a reasonable fee. If we had a Tractor we would save us from the exuberant hiring charges and secondly we would be able to assist those small-scale farmers who are being exploited by the rich who over-charge them. The institution would also plough its own field and plant crops for its own use in the institution to subsidize on the food costs.
If we had one, the institution will also go along way to assist the farmers within Soy division. The few who own tractors charge lots of money and many farmers don't plough their farms because of high cost of hiring tractors. This would change many lives.
The costs of these Tractors are varied depending on the Horse Power. The accompanying implements also vary depending on the size and capacity. A good used tractor can cost up to £4000. A trailer costs £1400, a plough costs £800, and a maize sheller costs £600. This is to make sure that the tractor is in use throughout the year.
